1and1: Is It Really As Bad As They Say?

I’ll just level with you 100% on this one, okay?

I use 1and1.com to buy and manage my domain names. That’s it! Nothing more.

And throughout this review, I will be reminding you of that fact. You will understand why as you read on.

Again I buy domains only through 1and1.com. Because they are the cheapest and the best for managing domains. I don’t use their hosting service. For web hosting, I use SiteGround.com because SiteGround are the best for web hosting. Use them instead.

And here’s why.

It is better that I give you all the details before you start looking up what 1and1 really is and you start blaming me for sugar-coating all of this.

I guess the best way to put this is, 1and1 isn’t exactly in the best place right now. They’ve got hundreds of angry customers rallying against them in the internet community. These customers have expressed their complaints against 1and1 about everything.

They complained about their customer service. They complained about their billing. They complained about their cPanel. They warned people not to get involved with them.

And I’m pretty sure 1and1 has just lost hundreds of customers because of these negative feedbacks.

I get what they’re coming from. I mean, it is customers money and business that’s at stake after all.

But, before I list down all the negatives and you start judging whether 1and1 is wrong or right for you, let’s talk about 1and1, shall we?

Like the real 1and1, without all the shade and hate. You’d be surprised to know that they do have a positive side to them after all.

So, let’s get down to business, shall we?

A quick review about 1and1 and their services

1and1 is one of the oldest web hosting service providers out there. It was founded in Montabaur, Germany more or less 30 years ago.

Ever since then, they have developed and established a vast range of internet products. These are available in both local and international markets.

At present, the company offers hosting services, namely:

-Shared web hosting

-VPS hosting

-Dedicated hosting

-Cloud hosting

-Domain names

What’s more impressive is that their company operates across the globe. Currently, their headquarters is located in Montabaur, Germany. But, they also have offices in other parts of Germany like Karlsruhe, Zweibrucken, Munich and Berlin.

They also operate in other countries:

– Vienna, Austria

– Gloucester, England

– Sarreguemines, France

– Madrid, Spain

– Warsaw, Poland

– Bucharest, Romania

– Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

– Lenexa, Kansas

– Cebu, Philippines

And, they have a total of seven (7) data centres located in the USA and Europe.

1and1’s impressive feats

All the shade aside, it cannot be denied that 1and1 has amassed plenty of feats over the years. They are a big brand in the web world after all.

– More than 70,000 servers in operation

– More than 20,000 Terabytes of data transferred per month

– Hosting of about 19 million domains

– Transfer of more than 5 billion emails per month

– 24-hour surveillance by highly qualified specialists

– Multiple redundant 65 GBit/s connectivity

What you can get out of using 1and1

You get to own your website.

Always commission a third party to handle your web hosting (whether that may be 1and1 or any hosting provider) for you. That way you’ll get to own your website, fully monetise it and get great security.

Otherwise, if you continue to live off free platforms, your online business is BOUND TO FAIL SOMEDAY.

Free website platforms don’t let you scale your business efficiently. They have a lot of restrictions. They won’t let you use favourite third part premium themes. They won’t let you install some ‘must have’ plug-ins.

They won’t let you customise your own website fully, and they won’t allow you to monetise your own blog in the way that YOU want.

And the worst part is, they’ll randomly put ads in your websites in which you don’t get to benefit from AT ALL.

Let me just remind you that every business starts with an investment. So invest wisely in a web hosting company.

Google will rank your website higher

Every website out there is struggling to get some exposure. And, the best way to get exposure is to be displayed on the first page of Google.

Google has about hundreds of factors that they consider when they rank websites. Obviously, you don’t have to spend all of your time to know about all those factors.

Instead, you can just focus on factors in which the experts have already revealed like SPEED and SECURITY. Thankfully, 1and1 offers solutions to website speed and security. They provide free SSL certificates and DDoS protection.

You get a cheap domain from 1and1

Admit it, web addresses like strugglingmom.wordpress.com sounds a bit off, doesn’t it?

With 1and1, you get to scratch the word “WordPress” from your address and get to have your own domain name for life! You can finally get your customers to see your website as a professional online business.

1and1 may have haters, but they sure do know how to attract customers. I mean hello?

Who wouldn’t want a cheap domain?

Reminder: I buy domains only through 1and1.com. Because they are the cheapest and the best for managing domains. I don’t use their hosting service. For web hosting, I use SiteGround.com because SiteGround are the best for web hosting. Are you getting it?

1and1’s fierce competitors

SiteGround is one of the highest rated web hosts in the WordPress community. It was developed in the year 2004 and has since been improving its services throughout the following years. It is mainly known for the high-quality package deals that it offers including the StartUp, GrowBig and GoGeek.

SiteGround prides itself on delivering reliable security and speed solutions. They also provide its users with the BEST 24/7 customer support.

And top it all, WordPress has personally recommended SiteGround as a web host.

SiteGround is my personal favourite for web hosting. I use them for all my websites. They are great!

Blue host was released in the year 1996. Now, this might be one of the oldest web hosts out there, but newbies on the block still haven’t outshone this one. Like SiteGround, it is also recommended by WordPress to its users.

They provide speed solutions and 24/7 customer support which is reachable by phone, live chat or email. They are also currently rated as the number 1 hosting provider for small businesses.

Dream Host

Like BlueHost, Dream Host has also been active for quite a long time, 18 years. They rose to fame when people found out that they make web hosting particularly easy to get around to. They offer their customers 1-click WordPress install and automatic WordPress updates. Also, they provide a custom dashboard, unlimited space and bandwidth and free SSDs. Apart from this, they won’t make you pay for setup fees plus you get a free domain!

InMotion Hosting

InMotion Hosting, on the other hand, is known for giving excellent technical support and 99.9% uptime. Their features are optimised for bloggers who want to expand and grow.

Last, but definitely not the least is the HostGator. This web host remains on top as it continually gives their users good 24/7 customer support and 99.9% uptime. Like Dream Host, it also offers a 1-click WordPress installation.

1and1’s top-tier features

Scalable Performance

Usually, people would go for small and cheaper package deals at the start of their business. And, that’s fine. People don’t usually expect their online business to attract many customers and gain high traffic in such a short period of time.

But, what happens when that time suddenly comes? Relatively speaking, you have less RAM and memory. So, when a lot of clicks and downloads are happening at the same time, your website might react slower than usual.

This is because your website performs according to how much RAM and memory limit is available to it. If you have less of these factors, then the processes can only run in parallel if there’s low traffic.

If you exceed and get too much traffic, then the processes might start running successively instead of simultaneously. As a result, your readers might get annoyed with your website being all slow and might abandon it.

Thankfully, 1and1 has offered its users a solution to this problem. Their users can now flexibly scale their website’s performance in five different levels.

What does this mean?

This means you can avail higher memory limit and RAM for your package.

Also, 1and1 also offers a monitoring system which lets you know how your website is currently performing. They will show a bar graph with green, yellow and red colours. Green means your site is at peak performance, yellow means you have delayed requests and red means you have aborted requests.

HTTP/2 is HTTP protocol’s latest update. This advance in tech was made possible by the Internet Engineering Task Force. Although this tech has only sparked up a few talks in the web community, its impact is still undeniable. It brings better website security, speed and efficiency.

Its significant advancements include multiplexing, server push, and prioritisation and header compression. Also, it only makes use of a single connection when loading a website. This stays open as long as the site is also accessible.

A BIG NOTE: Google favours HTTP/2 websites and ranks them higher.

PHP 7.2/OPcache

PHP 7.2 is the first programming language which has different built-in security and encryption options. It uses libsodium extensions. Also, it improves Zend Engine, opcode caching, and data structure. Implementing PHP 7.2 can get you an enormous increase in website speed and efficient memory management.

Up to 768 MB- PHP Memory Limit

1and1 just made ‘worrying about memory limits’ a thing of the past. They offer a PHP Memory Limit of up to 768 MB.

The PHP memory limit dictates the maximum memory for PHP scripts of all types. A lot of people have struggled with trying to increase this limit as they want to put out better content with displayed images or videos.

With this new feature, people (including you) will no longer have to worry about choosing what photo or video to upload that will take up less space.

Ever wonder how you can improve load times and lessen data usage for your dear visitors?

Well, the answer is here! With Gzip, you can significantly reduce the amount of data that your web server transfers by up to 70%. If you’re a bit curious about this feature, then read for a quick rundown below:

Gzip is a software application used for compressing and decompressing files. This was developed by Jean-Joup Gailly and Mark Adler as a replacement for the Unix-written program called “Compress”.

The benefits of using this feature include compression of HTML with PHP and Apache and control and compression of CSS and JS. Also, it can also cause a significant decrease in bandwidth.

BIG NOTE: Besides HTTP/2, Google also favours website which uses Gzip and ranks them higher.

Hybrid Technology with Smart SSD

Storing the web servers and storage on the same hardware platform can decrease your website’s performance. The processes will have a hard time running in parallel. But with the smart SSD that 1and1 has incorporated into their system, this will no longer be a problem.

Content Delivery Network (CDN)

A content delivery network (CDN) is a network of proxy servers. The data centres (of these servers) are distributed across the globe and are connected to each other via the internet. It delivers internet contents such as texts, graphics, and scripts. It serves applications, live streaming media, social networks and downloadable files (e.g. media, document).

At 1and1, the CDN stores static content of their users’ websites and distribute it over a network of 62 data centres. In this way, visitors can get fast loading times as they can get the data of 1and1’s hosted websites from the nearest server to their location.

Worried about 1and1’s data centre failing? You don’t have to as they have stored all shared hosting packages in two separate centres.

That’s right. They have BACK-UP.

If one of it fails, 1and1’s system automatically shifts to the second data centre where your data remains available and safe.

1&1 SSL Certificate

According to GlobalSign:

SSL Certificates are small data files that digitally bind a cryptographic key to an organisation’s details. When installed on a web server, it activates the padlock and the https protocol (over port 443). It allows secure connections from a web server to a browser.

Websites which uses SSL can be identified by visitors/readers as their address will begin with “https://”.

Google is pretty cranky about websites with no SSL certificates. If your site still doesn’t have this, then you can forget about dreaming of higher Google ranking.

DDoS Protection

Distributed Denial of Service (or DDoS) has become rampant in internet society. This form of attack is commonly used by hackers to get a single system or website to stop working.

Hackers use multiple compromised computers to flood traffic into the website. The moment this happens, the site immediately stops responding to the visitors.

1and1 provides DDoS protection against these malicious attacks.

Their system automatically recognises these activities before they reach the servers. They counter-attack with necessary measures to prevent damage to their users’ websites.

Web space Recovery

1and1 lets their users create backups for up to 6 days of their data. They can restore their files in their web hosting package by creating restore points for deleted or lost stuff. By offering this feature, users can have complete security and control over their data.

1&1 SiteLock

Worried about malware, unauthorised access and threats from notorious hackers? With 1and1 sitelock, you won’t have to! It can scan up to 500 whooping subpages of your website and look for vulnerabilities.

24/7 Service

1and1 offers a 24/7 customer service to their users. For inquiries about their products and features, their staff can be reached via phone or email.

Unlimited Webspace /Websites / E-mail Accounts /Databases

1and1 offers UNLIMITED packages.

And yes, you read that right, it’s UNLIMITED. You won’t have to worry about running out of server space ever again. You also won’t have to pay additional costs in the future!

You can have as many e-mail mailboxes as you want, with each mailbox having storage of up to 2 GB. And, you won’t have to worry about having a limited number of databases with 1and1. It is flexible with each one having storage of up to 1 GB.

1&1 App Center

In case you’re worried about running out of options, 1and1 offers the most popular apps, plug-ins and themes to their users. They provide these free of charge so that their users always have a tool to complete their web tasks.

Pros and cons of 1and1

Low Threshold

1and1 is famous for being on the more affordable spectrum of web services. And of all points, I think this is the most important pro of 1and1. It’s probably the main reason why people are drawn to consume their package deals in the first place.

Multiple services

1and1 provides services other than web hosting. At present, the company offers:

-website builder and hosting

-domain, cloud and dedicated solutions

-email and office solutions

-services for eCommerce websites, online marketing and web security.

Dual Hosting

One of 1and1’s strong points is that they host their users’ website/s at two data centres with different locations. They always have a plan B in case something goes wrong with the active data centre.

Money Back Guarantee

To be fair, most of the web hosts out there also offer a money back guarantee.

But, I’m still going to put this as one of the pros because:

One: it’s always good to know that you can always get your money back once you know that the web host doesn’t suit your need.

Two: “Money back guarantees” only mean that the company is confident that you’ll be satisfied with their service once you signed up for it.

If you take the time to look at other web hosts’ websites, you will notice that most of them also guarantee you 99.9% uptime (which is totally fine by the way).

But, if you dig up a little bit more and look into customer reviews, you’ll find that some web hosts aren’t true to their words. For some, it may only be just a matter of decimal points so it can’t possibly do you any harm, right?

Uptime is a significant factor that you have to consider when choosing the right web host. As a work-at-home mom, you’d want your website to be up and available for your customers all the time (if that’s even possible).

At 1and1, they make sure that your website is available to your customers 99.9% of the time.

So, I guess it’s safe to say that 1and1 takes the crown on this one.

Loading time

I wouldn’t exactly say that this is a FULL PRO for 1and1. But, I have to give it to them that for a low price, they’re loading times are relatively fast.

24/7 Customer Service

A lot of their users have voiced out their complaints about 1and1’s customer service. Apparently, many of them have found their staff to be unreliable and unknowledgeable. This may be because some of them are not really experts and are only running on scripts.

I for one, have never had this problem with them. Up till now they have always been helpful and being a technophobe, they have always treated me with respect and resolved my queries.

Outdated Training Materials

1and1 hasn’t been updating their training materials. And they should, I mean, they do upgrade their tech and release new features.

It’s not Easy To Use- as they claimed it to be

First-time users don’t know how to get around with their apps and features. They need all the help they can get (ahem customer service and training materials) but 1and1 hasn’t made things easier for them.

If you are extremely impatient with learning all the basic techs, then 1and1 might just annoy the hell out of you.

No cPanel

Except for 1and1, the web hosts (that I know) use cPanels. 1and1 decided that instead of using cPanels, it would be better if they created a custom backend setup to make things easier.

Well, their decision just made uproars from angry customers. Beginners have found their custom backend setup confusing (not to mention-frustrating).

They feature advanced features instead of necessary options such as Quick Install, Add Domain or File Directory. And, if you’re not one of the customers who has availed domain names from them, then you’ll find it 100x more confusing.

It will take “some” time to get around with it if you’re not a techie or merely a beginner to all of this.

They have a lot of angry customers.

Okay, this may not be technical, but I’m still going to place this as one of their cons. Why?

Because reading their complaints online will make you doubt 1and1’s credibility as a web host. It will discourage you to use their service even with all the pros I just mentioned above.

This is one of the reasons I use SiteGround.com for their hosting service. I would highly recommend them.

Auto-Renewal and Billing

This may be the number 1 reason why they have a lot of haters on their radar right now. And, trust me when I say that those haters aren’t going to disappear anytime soon.

Apparently, 1and1 automatically charge their customers for another WHOLE YEAR WITHOUT THEIR CONSENT.

This is in their settings. If auto-renewal is a problem, then switch it off!

My conclusion

If you’re just starting out and are on tight on budget, then 1and1 might be your best option for buying domains names.

However, for web hosting, I would only recommend SiteGround.com.
